While low or no suction can occur with a breast pump, it should not be possible for your motor to create different suction on each side. If this seems to be occurring, it is likely a problem with a component part or the assembly of parts. To troubleshoot and find a solution, simply follow the steps below.
1. Inspect The Individual Components Of The Pump
- Are there any chips or cracks in the parts?
- Is the tubing free of twists or kinks?
- Are all of the components assembled correctly? Pay close attention to the diaphragms and valves. Get a firm seal between parts by using a twisting motion when attaching.
- Are the parts clean and dry? Don't store your pumping kit in the fridge, moisture can build up and reduce suction.
- Is your breast shield size correct? Using the wrong size affects suction and milk production. Check the size for both nipples. It is possible to need two different sizes.
- How old are your parts? The pumping kit should be replaced at least every 90 days.
2. Switch the Parts Around
- Starting with the valve, switch parts one at a time from the side that is working to the side that isn't working. This will isolate the part that is causing the issue.
- If the lower suction is still on the same breast side regardless of switched pieces, the suction issue is most likely due to the users anatomy.
